Today we build a really fast compost pile from junk laying around the yard... soon we'll have enough biomass to really get this cooking. Based on Geoff Lawton's method in Permaculture Soils, we're shooting for an 8-day pile. We shall see if this fast composting method works... stay tuned.

I bought your Compost Everything book. You're a good writer. The story about singing songs to your pet worm Dinky is... not a surprise! lol.

Why are you putting a metal floor in your compost bin? You want worms to come up out of the ground to eat your compost and poop! Compost without worms is just a pile of rotting junk!

Not sure I understand the idea of compost bins with metal floors. The reason they are called compost piles is because you just dig a slight depression to expose fresh soil, mix the Carbon and Nitrogen waste and let the worms and other bugs come up and help in the decomposition. Turn the pile every now and then to oxygenate and prevent fire, and voila...compost/soil. When one gets going, start another one.

I'm interested that you used a sheet of iron underneath your new compost bin. Why? I've always thought bugs and stuff from under the compost do it good. One use I would make for the iron is to use it as a base to burn your woody yard waste. That way you save the minerals and can use them where you want them.

LOL - some people get attached to ideas and won't let go even when they are not appropriate in a specific situation. If chickens don't work for you, why should it matter to someone somewhere else?
When I announced on a certain permaculture FB group that I did not think swales would work at my place, a small war erupted online; friendships were terminated and the group schismed. Sheesh! Some folks make their living digging swales - I guess I threatened their existence from 3000 miles away.
I'm just about done with hot composting; I prefer cold sheet composting under duck bedding mulch - I'm not working with too many seeds, so it doesn't really need to get hot. If the odd veggie sprouts, it's not the end of the world.

I am tired, so admittedly a bit impatient- BUT, we watch you build a compost pile for 15 mins, then you FINALLY tell the trick to a "Almost Instant Compost" at the 15 min mark approximately...UGH...So build the pile, then turn every 4days...OK- it does work, just FYI, this was how I first learned to build one. TRICK is the wetting it initially and then turning it frequently....G'night.

It's hard not to be happy during mango season...except when the squirrels keep eating my mangoes!! They take ONE BITE and then move on to the next one. We finally just pulled all the green ones just so the squirrels wouldn't get them.

Why did you put that metal in the bottom of your compost bin?? I'm no expert that's for sure but don't you want the worms to come up and help to break things down and leave their "castings" behind??

Compost can be made in 14 days if you feed it nutritional yeast, alfalfa meal, and unsulphured molasses and turn it every 48-60 hours. I took my lawn clippings, kitchen waste (especially coffee grounds and ground up banana peels and eggshells, and added the mixture to every 6 inches of compost pile. I put it in a 32-gallon plastic garbage can chock full of 1/3" holes, and voila! In 14 days, I had a can full of compost to make compost tea.

Mass vs. Volume..... raw uncomposted naterial some mass lots of volume, composted material about the same mass(?) lots less volume.
Would the tin not have been better used on the top?

Man you need some kind of shredder. That stuff is too big to break down completely. It will take such a long time, cutting it up would help.
